Water absorption of white fused alumina WFA aggregate
Due to its high refractory temperature and high specific gravity, white fused alumina WFA aggregate is a kind of refractory for the refractory kiln and steel-making industry. The water absorption of WFA aggregate reflects the technical indexes of porosity. The porosity of WFA is generally less than 15% and the absorption of water is less than 5%.
As refractory aggregate and castable, white fused alumina should have high bulk density and small porosity.
With large porosity, the following properties of the refractory will be affected:
-
Reduce the strength and wear resistance.
-
Decrease permeability, water resistance, and thermal shock resistance.
-
Water absorption and moisture absorption capacity increase.
Therefore, how to control the porosity and water absorption of WFA aggregate is particularly important. From the smelting stage of electric melting of white fused alumina, the manufacturer has to make long enough smelting time of white corundum. In the meanwhile, it has to reduce the formation of large crystals. Moreover, selecting the white fused alumina block in the middle and lower part of the furnace will get better quality. The white fused alumina block in the furnace core and furnace edge has large porosity, relatively loose, and low bulk density.
